Each summer, talented students join Lumbee River EMC to learn, grow, and make a meaningful impact. This year, we're proud to spotlight Hector H. Lopez, who serves as our Cybersecurity Intern in the IT Department.
When asked about his favorite part of interning at Lumbee River EMC, Hector's answer was simple: the people.
"The company has a great, welcoming environment where everyone genuinely knows and supports each other, even across different departments," he shared. "It's inspiring to see people who started out in field roles or working directly with members grow into leadership positions throughout their careers."
Throughout his internship, Hector has gained valuable hands-on experience while working alongside the IT team. One thing that surprised him most was the depth of knowledge and experience shared by employees across the cooperative.
"I've learned a lot through hands-on experience with my team, but what surprised me most is just how much knowledge everyone here has. The team brings so much experience to the table, and it really shows in how projects are handled."
Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree at East Carolina University, Hector discovered his passion for cybersecurity after exploring both computer science and cybersecurity studies. As he progressed through his coursework, he realized cybersecurity was the perfect fit for his interests and long-term career goals.
For students considering a future in technology, Hector encourages them to gain hands-on experience as early as possible.
"It doesn't have to be anything complicated," he said. "Help friends or people in your community set up computers, Wi-Fi, or troubleshoot basic technology issues. There are also many free online resources available to help you learn. Connecting with others who share your interests is one of the best ways to grow and discover what you're passionate about."
One accomplishment Hector is especially proud of this summer is working toward earning three industry certifications: Cisco CCNA, CompTIA Security+, and ISC² Certified in Cybersecurity (CC). Along with preparing for these certifications, he has participated in several team projects that have expanded his technical knowledge and provided valuable real-world experience.
As the summer comes to a close, Hector will return to East Carolina University to continue working toward his bachelor's degree. Looking ahead, he hopes to one day return to Lumbee River EMC if the opportunity arises.
