Energy-Saving Tips

Energy-Saving Tips:

  1. SmartHub Usage Tools – SmartHub offers multiple tools to help you efficiently manage your energy consumption. These tools can be found under the “Usage” tab on the website sidebar. Members can gain insights into their average usage, energy details by appliance, and projected bills.
  2. Adjust Your Thermostat – Set your thermostat to 68°F in the winter and 78°F in the summer to reduce heating and cooling costs. Consider a programmable or smart thermostat for better efficiency. You can save 6% to 8% on air conditioning costs for each degree the thermostat setting is raised.
  3. Seal Air Leaks – Keep all doors and windows closed tightly when operating an air conditioner. Ensure all air conditioner ducts passing through unconditioned basements, crawl spaces, and especially attics are well-sealed and insulated.
  4. Maintain Your Heating Systems – Schedule routine service for home heating systems. Replace furnace and heat pump filters once a month or as needed to maintain efficiency.
  5. Lower Water Heating Costs – Set your water heater to the warm setting (120°F) to save energy and reduce the risk of scalding.
  6. Use Energy-Efficient Lighting – Switch to LED bulbs, which use up to 90% less energy and last up to 25 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs.
  7. Unplug Unused Devices – Many electronics and appliances continue to draw power even when turned off. Use power strips to easily turn off multiple devices at once when not in use.
  8. Use Appliances Wisely – Run dishwashers, washing machines, and dryers with full loads to maximize efficiency. Periodically inspect your dryer vent to ensure it is not blocked, which saves energy and helps prevent fires. Manufacturers recommend using rigid venting material instead of plastic vents, which may collapse and cause blockages. Wash clothes in cold water with cold-water detergents whenever possible.
  9. Take Advantage of Natural Light – Open curtains during the day to let in natural light and reduce the need for artificial lighting.
  10. Consider Energy-Efficient Upgrades – When replacing appliances, look for ENERGY STAR®-certified products that consume less energy and lower long-term costs.

Action Steps for Members Seeking Assistance:

If you’re experiencing high electric bills and need assistance, here are the best ways to reach Lumbee River EMC:

  1. Call and speak to a Member Service Representative at 910-843-4131 (hold times may vary based on call volume).
  2. Download and Use SmartHub, our member portal. Visit our website at www.lumbeeriver.com to learn more.
  3. Email us at Support@lumbeeriver.com (response time is typically one business day).
  4. Visit one of our three locations (Lumberton, Pembroke, & Raeford) to speak to a Member Service Representative in person. Office hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

Additional Advice:

  • Compare Usage: Compare your energy usage over the last 12 months to see if your consumption was similar for the same period. If your usage has doubled or tripled, you may have an issue that requires attention.
  • Payment Assistance Programs: If affordability is a concern, ask about budget billing or assistance programs that may be available to help.
